Diabetic smooth muscle cells exhibit focal adhesions, via activation of the Focal Adhesion Kinase (FAK) (green), at the tips of the actin cytoskeleton (red), mounted in VECTASHIELD Mounting Medium for Fluorescence. Increased focal adhesions leads to a greater migratory and proliferative capacity, consistent with increased atherosclerosis development as seen in diabetic patients, which is the leading killer in the UK today.
