Primary rat neuron transfected with a plasmid encoding Myristolated AKT. Over expression of this gene increases cell growth and cell size. In the case of neurons, we see an increased number of processes known as dendrites. Our aim is to better understand some of the mechanisms that cause frontotemporal dementia. By growing these cells, we can model dementia in neurons and see how these cells change in comparison to normal neurons.
